When coming up with this computer, OLPC knew among the a tight budget and surprisingly created an extremely cheap creation that commonly be installed to keep, fix, repair or replace with no high price ticket or complicated equipment. When OLPC released their product, they sold around 300,000 very quickly, attracting the interest of larger computer manufacturers including Acer, HP and more. This interest led to development which caused the manufacturing and ultimately the distribution of consumer ready netbook inside a small amount of time. After their release, ıt had been reported by Amazon that in 2008, netbooks were everywhere in the top ten buying list and caused laptop sales to double from 2007-08. Netbooks took industry by storm, this is a fact and an undisputed one but the question is why.
Let’s start with initial performance. They sported the info components including on average a 160 GB hard drive, 512 MB – 1 GB of RAM, an optical drive, decent quality screen etc. The specs really weren’t that impressive but when you consider the fact you now have a computer half the size of a laptop with a price tag half the size as well, your computer suddenly became something many more people can afford. Also the size and weight made it a popular option for checking email, surfing the web and doing some basic document processing for the constantly on the go user. It absolutely was the combination of these things that made it such a hot sale and with technology constantly being developed; it was only a matter of time before an already good product became great.
With the introduction of SSD (Solid State Drives) the newest version of the traditional hard drive, the netbook became more efficient than before without increasing in size, making it once again a hit with consumers. Also with the introduction of improved keyboards and track pads, typing and navigating pages became a little less of a chore. There are still complaints about screen size and performance but you need to realize you don’t buy a netbook for the screen size or for the performance! You acquire it because it is portable and it just gets the job done.
Besides some tweaking, the netbook really hasn’t changed all that much but with as good a product as it was when it came out, there isn’t a lot that needed to be changed to make it great. From OLPC to the computer manufacturers to the consumer from its beginnings until now, the netbook has remained uncomplicated but a perfect option for the on the go user.
